Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division - Common Multiples - Starter
Maths Resource Description
The Autumn Term of Year 6 includes a comprehensive series of starters for Week 7, focusing on key mathematical operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Pupils are challenged with 'Fluent in Four' revision exercises that aim to consolidate their arithmetic skills. On Day 1, students begin by performing addition calculations, such as adding 6,281 and 754. They are then tasked with completing part whole models and determining corresponding mixed numbers, which requires a good understanding of number relationships and fractions. The tasks also involve identifying common factors of numbers, further enhancing their number theory knowledge.
In addition to these numerical exercises, pupils are asked to engage with improper fractions by colouring bar models to represent these fractions visually. This helps to strengthen their grasp of the concept of fractions beyond whole numbers. For example, they might be asked to work with the improper fraction 25/8 and convert it to a mixed number. The exercises are designed to be diverse, catering to various aspects of the mathematics curriculum, and ensuring that pupils are fluently applying their mathematical knowledge across different contexts. Such activities not only test their calculation skills but also encourage critical thinking and problem-solving.
