Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division - Short Division - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In a Year 6 mathematics lesson focused on short division, students are presented with a series of tasks designed to strengthen their understanding of various arithmetic operations. The lesson, part of the Autumn Term's fifth week, begins with a 'Fluent in Four' revision exercise that includes a division problem requiring the use of place value counters and short division. Students are tasked with dividing a five-digit number and expressing any remainder appropriately. Additionally, the starter activities challenge students to perform multiplications and to describe the movement of a clock's minute hand, identifying the type of angle formed at a specific time.
Another key component of the lesson involves interpreting and representing data graphically. Students are given a table of monthly rainfall measurements in millimeters, ranging from January to May, with values gradually increasing from 40 mm to 55 mm. The task is to translate this data into a graph, plotting the rainfall against the months to visually display the information. This exercise not only reinforces their skills in reading and drawing graphs but also encourages an understanding of the practical application of mathematics in real-world contexts such as meteorology.
