Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division - Multi-step Questions - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In the early stages of the academic year, Year 6 students delve into the world of multi-step mathematical problems, combining their skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The lesson plan sets out to reinforce their understanding of these four operations through engaging activities. The lesson starts with a recap of previous learning and then moves on to tackle multi-step problems that require students to apply their knowledge in various contexts, such as word problems and bar models. The use of key vocabulary such as 'add', 'subtract', 'multi-step problems', 'estimate', and 'operations' is emphasised, with resources like worksheets and presentations provided to support learning. Students are encouraged to discuss and identify the operations needed to solve the problems presented to them, enhancing their problem-solving skills.
During the lesson, students work through word problems and use bar models to visualise and solve complex problems. They are guided to identify key information, break down the problems into manageable steps, and determine the correct mathematical operations to use. For example, when given a sum of consecutive page numbers, students learn to find the midpoint and then the consecutive numbers themselves. In another activity, they use bar models to represent relationships between numbers, learning to subtract differences and divide totals to find individual values. Group work and independent activities help to consolidate their understanding, with differentiated worksheets allowing for varying levels of challenge. The lesson concludes with a reflective 'Give me five' session, where students consider what they have learned and identify any areas they found challenging, ensuring they are equipped to tackle multi-step problems with confidence.
