Converting Units - Imperial Units (Activity) - Starter
Maths Resource Description
The 'Fluent in Four' revision activity is a set of mathematical challenges designed for Year 5 students during their Summer Term in Week 11. It is structured to enhance their numerical fluency and understanding of various concepts. The first task involves arithmetic operations where students are required to add numbers such as 3,764 and 572, and to combine different place values to find a sum. These exercises help to reinforce their addition skills and understanding of the value of digits in larger numbers.
Another component of the activity challenges students to apply their knowledge of percentages and ordering numbers. They must calculate the unshaded percentage on a hundred square, given that 12% is shaded yellow and 37% is shaded purple, leading to the conclusion that 51% is not shaded. Additionally, there is a task to sequence numbers in descending order, with the largest number being first. The activity also includes a practical application of converting heights from metres and centimetres to millimetres, requiring students to place the heights of three children—Esin, Zach, and Rosie—in ascending order and then convert those measurements to millimetres (1,490 mm for Esin, 1,510 mm for Rosie, and 1,620 mm for Zach). This exercise not only tests their understanding of length units but also their ability to compare and order measurements.
