Properties of Shape - Drawing Lines and Angles Accurately (Activity) - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In the sixth lesson of the Summer Shapes series for Year 5 students, the focus is on drawing lines and measuring angles with precision. The class begins with a recap of previous learning and an introduction to the protractor's function, including getting familiar with its parts such as the origin, inner scale, and outer scale. The lesson's activities are designed to help children understand the importance of aligning the protractor correctly with the baseline and the end of the line. The first activity involves using a horizontal line to practise drawing specified angles, such as 44°, 166°, and 200°, by following the teacher's method. Students are shown how to work with angles greater than 180° by subtracting from a full turn of 360° and are later asked to replicate this process using a vertical line.
The second part of the lesson combines using the protractor and ruler to measure and draw angles and lines accurately. Through a step-by-step demonstration, children are taught how to measure a bottom line with a ruler and then how to use the protractor to measure an angle and the other line. This culminates in a challenge for the students to draw two diagrams precisely. The plenary session includes reflection on the skills used, such as using a protractor and ruler accurately, and addresses common misconceptions, like difficulties in measuring angles. The lesson aims to ensure that by its conclusion, students are confident in their ability to draw lines and angles accurately, and they are encouraged to remember these skills for future application.
