Multiplication and Division (1) - Divide by 100 - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In the third week of the Autumn term for Year 5, the focus of the mathematics lesson is on the concept of division, specifically dividing by 100. The lesson starts with a recap of prior learning, where students reflect on their understanding of dividing by 10 and how numbers are affected when moved one place to the right on a place value chart. Building on this, the class explores what happens when numbers are divided by 100, highlighting that the number becomes 100 times smaller, and thus, counters are moved two places to the right on the place value chart. Students are encouraged to practice this concept by working through calculations on whiteboards, using a place value chart and counters or by writing digits, for example, dividing 470 and 20 by 100.
Subsequent activities are designed to deepen the understanding of the relationship between multiplication and division by 100. Students are presented with scenarios that may require exchanging - for instance, understanding that £1 is equivalent to 100 pennies and can be divided equally by 100. Through the use of manipulatives, children are tasked to match calculations with their correct answers. The lesson concludes with a reflection activity, where students are asked to consider what they have learned, the skills they've used, and what they found challenging. Differentiated worksheets are provided to cater to varying levels of proficiency: from consolidating the concept of dividing by 100, to comparing division by 10 and 100 for numbers with two or three digits, ensuring that every child is supported in their journey towards mathematical understanding.
