Place value - Numbers to 100,000 - Starter
Maths Resource Description
The Autumn Term for Year 5 incorporates a series of starter activities in Week 2 that focus on enhancing students' understanding of place value and numbers up to 100,000. The exercises include a variety of tasks such as calculating sums, rounding numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand, and finding the area of shapes where each square represents one square centimetre. These activities are designed to reinforce numerical fluency and provide revision on key mathematical concepts. Additionally, students are prompted to complete sentences related to the number of days in different months, which not only aids in their grasp of calendar months but also in applying their knowledge of place value and addition.
One of the tasks involves a complex calculation where students must add 16 ones, 16 hundreds, and 16 tens to a base of twenty-two tens and five ones, encouraging them to engage with the concept of place value in a practical context. The 'Fluent in Four' section aims to revise and consolidate their skills through a series of quick-fire questions that cover various aspects of number sense and calculation. This includes exercises such as adding large numbers, rounding them to different place values, and completing patterns or sequences. Through these activities, students are expected to demonstrate their understanding and ability to work with large numbers, as well as their capacity to solve problems efficiently and accurately.
