Place value - Numbers to 1,000,000 - Presentation
Maths Resource Description
The fluency and reasoning teaching slides on numbers to one million provide an engaging way for children to deepen their understanding of place value. Activity 1 invites students to use counters to represent various numbers on a place value chart, which is divided into thousands and ones, each further subdivided into hundreds, tens, and ones (H T O). For example, they are tasked with creating the numbers 72,620 and 344,301 using the counters and then vocalising these numbers. A challenge is posed to determine the number of counters needed to represent the number 435,234, reinforcing their comprehension of large numbers and their respective places within a place value system.
Activity 2 focuses on part-whole diagrams, a visual tool that helps students break down large numbers into their constituent parts. Students are asked to complete diagrams for numbers such as 350,000 and 720,000 by identifying and adding the values of the thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones to form the whole. This activity not only helps students recognise the value of each digit within a number but also provides practice in addition and understanding the composition of numbers up to one million. Additionally, the slides include reasoning exercises, such as identifying the value of the digit 7 in different numbers, and pattern recognition with bar models, encouraging students to think critically about the numbers and their relationships. Discussions are prompted to explore various representations of numbers and to understand the importance of commas in demarcating thousands, which further aids in grasping the concept of place value up to one million.
