Place value - Thousands, hundreds, tens and ones - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In the initial week of the Autumn term, Year 5 students delve into the concept of place value, focusing on understanding the value of each digit in four-digit numbers. The National Curriculum objectives set the stage for students to recognise place value, round numbers to the nearest 10, 100, and 1,000, and read and write numbers up to 10,000. Key vocabulary such as 'place value', 'thousands', 'hundreds', 'tens', 'ones', and 'rounding' are introduced to build a strong foundation. The lesson utilises a range of resources including Base 10 blocks, counters, and place value grids, alongside worksheets and presentations to support learning. Students start by recapping previous knowledge and then engage in practical tasks where they represent 3-digit and 4-digit numbers with concrete objects, enhancing their understanding of place value and the significance of each digit's position.
The lesson progresses with a variety of activities designed to deepen students' comprehension of the place value system. These include reading numbers and completing sentences to identify the number of thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones in a given number, and representing these as calculations. Additionally, students assess their ability to read four-digit numbers and partition them using part-whole models. Further exercises involve identifying the value of underlined digits and representing numbers on a place value grid, either numerically or using practical resources. Independent work is supported by differentiated worksheets, and reasoning activities are tackled in pairs to encourage collaborative learning. The lesson concludes with reflective questions, helping students to consolidate their learning and identify any areas where they may need further support. Misconceptions such as the importance of place holders and the correct ordering of numbers are also addressed to ensure a comprehensive understanding of place value within the number system.
