Position and Direction - Draw on a Grid - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In a mathematics lesson aimed at Year 4 students during the Summer Term, the focus is on drawing and interpreting coordinates on a grid, as well as revising addition and subtraction skills. The session starts with a 'Fluent in Four' activity, designed to consolidate arithmetic proficiency. Pupils are presented with subtraction problems, such as 7,517 minus 486, and are tasked with calculating the result. They also engage with a place value challenge, requiring them to interpret a number sentence such as "4 less than forty-eight hundreds and 6 tens subtract 8 ones, seven tens and nine hundreds" and to express the answer as coordinates on a grid.
The lesson continues with exercises that encourage the students to write down the coordinates for given points on a grid, which helps them to understand the concept of 'x' and 'y' axes. Additionally, they explore various addition and subtraction facts, building on known equations such as 3,487 plus 4,894 equals 8,381, and are invited to create new equations by rearranging the numbers. To deepen their understanding of numerical relationships, pupils use the symbols '<' and '>' to compare numbers and discuss the possibility of writing equations with the equals sign at the beginning. The lesson also includes a comparison of areas of shapes, where students determine how much larger or smaller one shape is compared to another, enhancing their spatial awareness and measurement skills.
