Position and Direction - Describe Movement - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In a Year 4 summer term lesson focusing on Position and Direction, students are introduced to describing the movement of shapes on a coordinate grid. The lesson begins with a recap of previous learning, where children are encouraged to use directional language such as left, right, up, and down to articulate the movement of shapes and points. The concept of corresponding vertices is explained to help students understand the translation of shapes from one position to another. Resources provided for this lesson include worksheets and a presentation, and students are expected to engage with 'fluent in four' questions to consolidate their understanding.
The lesson includes a series of activities where children look at images on a grid and describe the translations between shapes, both forwards and in reverse. They also plot points on the grid and explain the translations between them. Through these exercises, students practise using the key vocabulary introduced in the lesson, such as shape, point, coordinate, grid, left, right, up, and down. An important part of the lesson is the plenary, where students reflect on what they've learned, the skills they've used, and what they found challenging. The lesson aims to correct common misconceptions, such as confusing the left and right sides, and includes differentiated worksheets to cater to varying levels of understanding, from working towards expected standards to achieving greater depth in describing translations.
