Money - Pounds and Pence - Starter
Maths Resource Description
The Year 4 mathematics starter activities for Summer Term Week 3 focus on enhancing pupils' fluency in various numerical concepts. On Day 1, the children are presented with a challenging number problem that requires them to calculate '7 more than 9 hundreds and 3 tens add eighty-four hundreds, 9 tens and 5 ones', which tests their understanding of place value and addition. To further consolidate their numeracy skills, another task involves matching fractions to their decimal equivalents, such as associating 1/4 with 0.25, 1/10 with 0.1, and 1/100 with 0.01, thereby strengthening their grasp of the relationship between common fractions and decimals.
Additionally, the students are asked to determine the total sum of a group of numbers, both in numeral form and written in words, reinforcing their ability to work with and express numbers in different formats. For instance, they learn to see that the sum of multiple '25s' amounts to 275, which they can write as 'two hundred and seventy-five'. Another exercise requires the children to write a number sentence based on a visual model, promoting their ability to translate visual information into mathematical expressions. For example, they may translate a series of '6s' with addition signs into the correct sum. These activities are designed to build confidence and proficiency in fundamental mathematical concepts through engaging and thought-provoking exercises.
