Decimals - Order Decimals - Starter
Maths Resource Description
During the second week of the summer term, Year 4 students are presented with a series of activities to deepen their understanding of decimals and their order. The initial task requires students to engage with decimals in a practical context, where they write down decimals and use comparison symbols such as greater than (>), less than (<), and equals (=) to compare the values. This exercise helps children visualise and comprehend the value of digits in the ones, tenths, and hundredths places. Additionally, students are encouraged to think creatively about numbers by writing down a number given in words and then describing it differently, for example, understanding that a number with 50 tens and 9 ones is the same as the number 509.
The lesson also includes a 'Fluent in Four' revision section, where students practice their arithmetic skills. They tackle problems such as calculating a number that is 2 less than 5 thousands plus 77 tens, and then adding six hundreds, 9 tens, and seven ones to it. Furthermore, the children apply their knowledge of comparison to complete sentence stems, determining how much larger or smaller one shape is compared to another. This application of mathematical concepts helps to reinforce their understanding of numerical values and differences. The activities not only focus on developing fluency with numbers and decimals but also encourage analytical thinking and the ability to express mathematical ideas in multiple formats.
