Decimals - Write Decimals - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In a mathematics lesson aimed at Year 4 students during the Summer Term, the focus is on understanding and writing decimals. The session starts with a "Fluent in Four" revision activity, challenging students to quickly solve a set of four problems, such as dividing 72 by 9 and finding the result of dividing a number made up of 5 hundreds, 4 tens, and 6 ones by half of 12. These exercises are designed to consolidate their arithmetic skills and understanding of place value. Additionally, students are tasked with completing a calculation that combines multiplication and addition, further practising their numerical operations and problem-solving abilities.
The lesson also includes practical applications of mathematics, such as finding the perimeter of a rectangle. Students are given the lengths of the sides of two rectangles, one in centimetres and the other in metres, and they must calculate the total perimeter of each shape. Moreover, the lesson addresses decimals in the context of place value. Students are presented with a place value chart and asked to identify the number of ones, tenths, and hundredths, and then to write the decimal number that is represented. This exercise helps students visualise and understand decimals in a tangible way, building a foundation for more advanced mathematical concepts.
