Fractions - Add 2 or more fractions (Using Models)- Presentation
Maths Resource Description
In this interactive mathematics lesson, students enhance their understanding of adding fractions through a series of engaging activities. The lesson begins with a discussion prompt, asking students to identify a fraction where the numerator exceeds the denominator. Following this, the first activity invites students to use two identical strips of paper, each folded into quarters, to visually represent and solve addition problems involving fractions like 1/4 + 1/4 and 3/4 + 3/4. This hands-on approach helps students to concretely see the results of adding fractions and encourages them to explore what other fractional sums they can create using the paper models.
Building on the first activity, the second activity introduces different models for adding fractions with unlike denominators, such as 4/6 + 5/6 and 2/7 + 2/7. Students are encouraged to choose their preferred model to find the sum of various fractions, aiding their conceptual understanding. In the third activity, a number line is utilised to add fractions, further reinforcing the concept that fractions are parts of a whole. Reasoning tasks challenge students to critically analyse and explain the process of adding fractions, as seen in examples where they must determine if given solutions are correct and explain their reasoning. The lesson also includes independent work where students colour in models to represent calculations and create their own models to solve given problems, fostering a deeper comprehension of fraction addition.
