Area - Making Shapes - Starter
Maths Resource Description
The 'Fluent in Four - Revision' activity is designed for Year 4 students to practise and consolidate their mathematical skills during the Spring term, specifically in week 4, day 3. The exercises include a variety of challenges that test pupils' understanding of multiplication and area calculation. One task prompts students to complete the multiplication sentence 8 × __ = 48, reinforcing their times tables knowledge. They are also asked to compare multiplications by determining how much greater 8 × 9 is compared to 7 × 3. Another part of the activity requires students to calculate the area of a shaded rectilinear shape, by counting squares to determine its total area.
Additionally, the activity includes a problem-solving question where children use base 10 blocks to fill in the blanks and complete the multiplication equation 15 × 6. This visual method aids in deepening their understanding of multiplication as a concept. Finally, students are challenged to identify a 3-D shape from its net representation, encouraging spatial awareness and the ability to visualise geometric shapes. These tasks are designed to be engaging and educational, helping students to become fluent in the fundamental mathematical operations and concepts they are learning.
