Area - Counting Squares - Presentation
Maths Resource Description
In this educational presentation, students are introduced to the concept of measuring area through a practical and interactive approach. The lesson focuses on the technique of counting squares to determine the area of various shapes. Starting with a discussion, students are encouraged to explain the meaning of 'area' to a partner, laying the groundwork for the activities that follow. The first activity requires students to observe different shapes and complete sentences by filling in the number of squares that make up each shape's area, reinforcing their understanding of the concept through repetition and visual learning.
As the lesson progresses, students are presented with more complex tasks that challenge them to refine their counting strategy to avoid double-counting squares. The activities become more engaging with a colourful tower made out of blocks, where students must calculate the area covered by each colour, identifying which colour occupies the largest and smallest area. Further activities include using multiplication to count squares in rectilinear shapes more efficiently, as well as reasoning exercises where students infer the area of shapes with missing or obscured parts. Finally, independent work tasks solidify their learning, encouraging students to apply their counting strategies to various scenarios and discuss the effectiveness of these methods for different rectilinear shapes.
