Multiplication and Division - Correspondence Problems - Starter
Maths Resource Description
The 'Fluent in Four' revision session presents a series of mathematical challenges for Year 4 students in their Spring Term, Week 3, Day 4 and Day 5. The exercises are designed to enhance students' fluency in fundamental arithmetic operations. One problem asks students to calculate the division of 296 by 8, while another requires dividing 684 by the sum of 6 and 3. Pupils are also tasked with breaking down numbers into hundreds, tens, and ones, such as converting 600 into its constituent parts. The practical application of maths is demonstrated through a scenario where Cara buys a fire truck for £11 and 39p and pays with a £20 note, prompting students to work out the change due. Additionally, they must determine the number of straws needed to construct a square-based pyramid, fostering spatial awareness and geometric understanding.
On Day 5, the challenges continue with subtraction and addition problems involving fractions, as students are asked to fill in the blanks to complete equations. One real-life correspondence problem involves Rosie selecting coins from two piles, and students must find all the possible combinations she could choose. Tia's ribbon dilemma introduces measurement and subtraction, where she has 3 metres of ribbon and uses 1 metre and 27 centimetres, leaving students to calculate the remaining length. Finally, they are introduced to volume and capacity, as they must determine the volume of liquid in a container and its capacity, with answers provided in litres and millilitres. These exercises aim to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills in a fun and engaging way.
