Multiplication and Division - 1 and 12 times tables - Starter
Maths Resource Description
During the first week of the Spring Term, Year 4 students are engaged in a series of starter activities that focus on the 1 and 12 times tables, as well as fundamental arithmetic skills such as addition and problem-solving with multiplication and division. One of the tasks requires students to perform an addition operation, combining the number 6,998 with 367, which tests their ability to carry out calculations accurately. Another activity challenges them to understand and apply inequality symbols by comparing different objects, enhancing their comprehension of mathematical relationships.
Further exercises include a practical application of addition involving hundreds, tens, and ones, where students add half of 4,634 to a given number composed of seven hundreds, six tens, and nine ones. Additionally, students are tasked with identifying two numbers that, when multiplied, yield a product of 72 and, when added, give a sum of 18; this exercise is designed to strengthen their understanding of the relationship between factors and sums. In a real-world context, they are also asked to calculate the combined height of two stacked boxes, one green and one blue, with heights of 19 cm and 8 mm, and 27 cm and 5 mm respectively. This question not only tests their ability to add lengths in centimetres and millimetres but also encourages them to think about the practical applications of their mathematical skills.
