Multiplication and Division - Multiply by 10 - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In the Autumn Term of Year 4, students engage in a series of starter activities focusing on multiplication and division during Week 10, Day 1. One of the tasks, "Fluent in Four - Revision," challenges students to apply their arithmetic skills to various problems. They are required to find the difference in length between a pen and a pencil, with the measurements provided in centimetres and millimetres. Additionally, they must perform addition by calculating the sum of 42 and 37. Another task involves estimating the value of 'A' on a number line, where students must use their understanding of numbers and their positions to make an educated guess.
Further exercises include finding half of 144 and then adding one unit and two tens to the result. This combines the concepts of division and addition to test students' numerical fluency. In a different activity, students are presented with three shapes, with Shape C identified as a square. They must arrange these shapes in descending order based on their perimeters, starting with the shape that has the greatest perimeter. The shapes are not drawn to scale, which requires the students to rely on the numerical data provided rather than visual cues. These activities are designed to strengthen the students' foundational skills in mathematics, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and understanding of geometric properties.
