Multiplication and Division - Correspondence Problems - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In the third week of the Autumn term, Year 4 students delve into correspondence problems as part of their Multiplication and Division unit. The lesson commences with a review of the previous year's learning, where students explored the relationship between 'n' objects and 'm' objects. The aim is to build on this foundation by solving more intricate problems and utilising multiplication facts. The class is introduced to key vocabulary such as 'multiplication' and 'systematic method', with additional resources like worksheets and presentations to aid learning. Students are encouraged to approach problems methodically, starting with simpler combinations and progressing to more complex ones.
The first activity challenges the children to determine all possible ice cream flavour combinations using a systematic approach, beginning with vanilla and one topping, then moving through all available options. This hands-on exercise helps them understand the multiplication calculation involved. In the second activity, students apply a systematic method to find different coin combinations, recording their findings independently. Throughout the lesson, key questions prompt the use of tables, codes, and physical coins to explore all possible combinations. The plenary includes a 'Give me five' reflection exercise, where students evaluate what they've learned, the skills they've applied, and any challenges they've faced. Differentiated worksheets cater to varying levels of proficiency, from 'working towards' with simpler tasks to 'working at greater depth' with more complex scenarios, ensuring all students are engaged and challenged according to their abilities.
