Multiplication and Division - Divide by 100 - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In a Year 4 mathematics lesson focused on division, students are introduced to the concept of dividing by 100. The lesson begins with a small step starter to recap the previous learning, where students are reminded of their experience with dividing by 10 and the effect it has on the numbers when using a place value chart—moving the counters one place to the right. The lesson then progresses to dividing by 100, with the understanding that, similar to how 10 has one zero, 100 has two zeros, and therefore the numbers must be moved two places to the right. Students practice this new skill with calculations on whiteboards, using place value charts and counters or by writing the digits directly, for example, working out 470 divided by 100 and 20 divided by 100.
Following the initial practice, the lesson includes three activities that further explore the relationship between multiplication and division by 100. The first activity reinforces the similarities between the two operations, while the second activity introduces the concept of exchanging, such as understanding that £1 is equivalent to 100 pennies and can be divided by 100. The third activity encourages the use of manipulatives to match calculations with their correct answers. To conclude, the plenary involves a reflective 'Give me five' session where students discuss what they've learned, the skills they've used, any challenges they faced, and the key takeaways from the lesson. Differentiated worksheets are provided to cater to varying levels of student understanding, from consolidating basic division by 100 to comparing divisions by 10 and 100 at greater depths.
