Measurement Length and Perimeter - Add lengths - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In a Year 4 mathematics lesson focused on measurement of length and perimeter, students are encouraged to apply their understanding of addition and division to solve a variety of problems. The lesson starts with a 'Fluent in Four' revision activity, where pupils are tasked to complete a bar model by dividing 21 by 3, and to calculate the result of doubling the product of 4 times 8. The exercises are designed to reinforce mental arithmetic skills and the understanding of multiplication and division concepts.
The lesson continues with practical application problems, where students must add different lengths in kilometres and metres, choosing a method that best suits them to find the total distance. For example, students are asked to add 5 km to 3,000 m and 2,000 m, and to combine 1,340 m with 660 m to make up two kilometres. Another real-life scenario presented is calculating change; Alvin buys tangerines for 72p with a £5 note, and students must work out the change he should receive. Additionally, there is an exercise on angles where students must describe an angle as being greater or less than a right angle, using terms such as 'obtuse' or 'acute' to classify it. These activities are aimed at developing students' problem-solving skills and their ability to apply mathematical knowledge to everyday situations.
