Measurement Length and Perimeter - Equivalent Lengths – m & cm - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In the Autumn Term of Year 4, students are introduced to the concept of equivalent lengths in metres and centimetres during Week 8. The starter activities are designed to provide a quick revision of these concepts. One of the exercises prompts students to use comparative language, specifically the words 'taller' and 'shorter', to describe the relative heights of different children. For example, they are given the heights of Zach at 142 cm, Leanna at 1 m 31 mm, Esin at 1 m 25 cm, and Mal at 118 cm, and they must determine who is taller or shorter in comparison to others. This exercise not only reinforces measurement conversion but also encourages the use of mathematical language in context.
Another part of the starter activities includes 'Fluent in Four - Revision', where students are challenged with numerical problems that involve completing sentences and calculations. They must solve addition problems, such as combining tens and ones, and fill in missing digits in a given sum to practice their arithmetic skills. Additionally, they are tasked with completing a part-whole model and writing corresponding number sentences, further developing their understanding of number relationships and addition. These activities are aimed at enhancing the students' fluency in mathematics by providing them with opportunities to apply their knowledge in a variety of contexts.
