Measurement Length and Perimeter - Equivalent Lengths – mm & cm - Presentation
Maths Resource Description
In the second lesson of a series on measurement, students are introduced to the concept of equivalent lengths in millimetres (mm) and centimetres (cm). The lesson aims to teach children how to convert between these two units of measurement to find equivalent lengths. It begins with a simple question: "How many millimetres are there in a centimetre?" This sets the stage for a deeper understanding of the metric system and its application in measuring length and perimeter. The lesson includes a visual aid showing part of a ruler in cm, with each small division representing one mm, reinforcing the concept that 10 mm make up 1 cm.
Students then engage in a variety of activities to practice their new skills. The first activity prompts them to fill in the blanks to determine how many millimetres are in various lengths measured in centimetres. This is followed by measuring different items around the classroom and recording these measurements in both cm and mm, as well as just in mm, to further understand the practical application of these conversions. Another activity challenges students to complete part-whole models, exploring different ways to partition a given length, such as 54 cm, into a combination of cm and mm. Throughout the lesson, students are encouraged to discuss and reason their findings, correcting any mistakes and verifying their answers through true or false questions. This interactive approach helps students to confidently convert and compare measurements in mm and cm.
