Addition and Subtraction - Checking strategies - Starter
Maths Resource Description
Master the Curriculum presents a series of mathematical exercises aimed at Year 4 students for their Autumn Term studies during Week 7, Day 4 and Day 5. These exercises are designed to enhance fluency in essential arithmetic skills, such as estimation, addition, and subtraction. On Day 4, students are tasked with matching calculations to appropriate estimates, for example, estimating the result of 72 divided by 8, and then using this skill to solve problems involving money. Tia's financial transaction, where she gives away £5 and 34p from her £8 and 48p, requires students to calculate the remaining amount by subtracting pounds and pence separately. Additionally, the children are asked to identify a 3D shape from a given net, enhancing their geometrical understanding.
On Day 5, the exercises become more complex, encouraging students to explore various addition and subtraction facts and to understand the concept of volume through comparison. The children are prompted to use relational symbols to compare volumes, such as determining whether 2 litres and 500 millilitres are greater than, less than, or equal to 2.5 litres. They are also asked to apply their knowledge of addition to a practical scenario involving a pictogram that shows apple consumption over five days, adjusting the data to account for an increase in apples eaten the following week. These activities are designed to build a strong foundation in mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
