Addition and Subtraction - Add 2 four digit numbers (more than one exchange) - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In a series of exercises designed for Year 4 students during the Autumn Term, the focus is on enhancing their addition and subtraction skills, particularly when adding two four-digit numbers that require more than one exchange. The 'Fluent in Four - Revision' section serves as a starter, encouraging students to complete numerical sentences and practice calculations that involve combining tens and ones. For instance, students are asked to calculate sums such as 42 + 37 and to add together numbers represented as '3 tens and 18 ones' with '23 ones and 2 tens', reinforcing their understanding of place value and addition.
As part of the practical application of their mathematical skills, students are presented with real-world scenarios, such as calculating the total cost of purchases. In one example, Tia buys a phone for £284 and a laptop for £2,159, and students must determine the combined cost. Similarly, they calculate the total expenditure when Tia's friend, Esin, also buys a laptop for £1,664. These exercises not only test the students' ability to perform complex additions but also help them to understand the use of maths in everyday situations. Additionally, the tasks include estimating values on a number line and understanding increments, further developing their numerical fluency and estimation skills.
