Addition and Subtraction - Add and subtract multiples – 1s, 10s, 100s, 1000s - Starter
Maths Resource Description
During the Autumn Term in Week 5, Year 4 students are introduced to a revision session on addition and subtraction with a focus on adding and subtracting multiples of 1s, 10s, 100s, and 1000s. The session begins with a 'Fluent in Four' activity, which aims to consolidate their understanding through a series of exercises. One task involves completing sentences by correctly using the comparative terms 'taller' and 'shorter' to describe the relative heights of different trees. For example, students must assess the heights of an Oak, Pine, and Spruce tree, provided in metres and centimetres, to determine which tree is taller or shorter than the others.
The revision activities also include number line exercises where students are tasked with locating specific numbers such as 20, 16, 13, and 18, and then arranging these numbers in descending order. Additionally, they practice their calculation skills with simple addition problems like 67 + 32 and combining ones and tens to find the sum. The exercises are designed to be engaging and to help students visualise mathematical concepts, such as when they are asked to draw an arrow to the number 3,999 on a number line, reinforcing their understanding of place value and the proximity of numbers within the thousands range.
