Place value - Represent numbers to a 1000 - Starter
Maths Resource Description
The starter activities for Year 4 during the Autumn Term's first week are designed to strengthen students' understanding of place value and number representation up to 1000. The exercises challenge children to perform basic addition calculations, such as adding 304 and 121. They are also asked to demonstrate fluency in solving a series of four questions, which serve as a revision tool to consolidate their numerical skills. For instance, students are prompted to identify the number represented by combining 3 ones and 14 tens with 4 tens and 12 ones, and to express their calculations using a part-whole model.
Further tasks include arithmetic problems that require adding and subtracting multiples of 100, such as 200 plus 400 and 800 minus 300. These exercises are designed to help students grasp the concept of place value in larger numbers. Additionally, pupils are presented with a problem-solving question where they must find a multiple of 100 that has a digit sum of 7, and then subtract this from the number that is 100 less than 1,000. The activities are varied and incorporate real-world contexts, like measuring the length of a pencil, to make the learning experience engaging and relevant. This structured approach to numeracy aims to build confidence and proficiency in mathematical concepts among Year 4 students.
