Multiplication with game board - Practical Maths Activity
Maths Resource Description
An engaging practical maths activity that incorporates multiplication and division is designed around a game board with 100 numbered squares. To start the game, players copy the game board design and each is assigned a different coloured pen. The gameplay revolves around the roll of the dice; each player rolls two dice and multiplies the numbers shown. They then look for the product on the game board and draw a line between two dots that border the square containing their answer. With each number appearing multiple times on the board, players can employ strategic thinking when deciding where to draw their line to maximise their chances of completing a square.
When a player successfully draws a line that completes a square, they claim it by colouring it in with their pen. Completing a square earns the player an additional turn, allowing them to roll the dice again and continue their streak. The game continues until all possible lines have been drawn. The winner is determined by who has claimed the most squares on the board. This activity not only serves as a fun game but also meets the National Curriculum objectives for Year 2, reinforcing the recall and use of multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5, and 10 times tables, as well as the recognition of odd and even numbers. To play, all that's needed is a game board, two dice, and two coloured pens.
