Mass and capacity - Add and subtract capacity - Starter
Maths Resource Description
The 'Fluent in Four' revision exercise for Year 3 students, set during the Summer Term of Week 11, Day 2, aims to enhance their mathematical fluency, particularly in the area of mass and capacity. The children are tasked with a series of problems that require both addition and subtraction skills. One problem prompts students to calculate 'one more than 8 hundred subtract 6 hundreds, nine tens and 7 ones', testing their understanding of place value and subtraction. Another activity involves adding two three-digit numbers, 354 and 638. To aid in this, students are encouraged to use counters, which are visually represented in the columns for hundreds (H), tens (T), and ones (O), to facilitate the calculation process and to understand the concept of carrying over in addition.
Practical application of mathematics is presented through a word problem where Malachi groups sweets into sets of five. Students must determine the total number of sweets he has by multiplying the number of groups by five and adding the remainder. This helps to solidify their multiplication and addition skills. Lastly, the children are asked to compare volumes of liquid in millilitres (ml) and litres (l), using the symbols for less than (<), greater than (>), or equal to (=). This exercise not only tests their understanding of capacity and volume but also reinforces the concept of comparing numbers and measurements.
