Properties of shape - Draw accurately - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In Year 3, during the first week of the Summer term, students delve into the Properties of Shape with a focus on drawing accurately. The lesson equips them with rulers, paper, pencils, worksheets, and a presentation to guide their learning. Key vocabulary such as 'rounding', 'measure', 'accurate', 'centimetres', 'millimetres', and 'convert' are introduced to establish a foundation for the lesson's objectives. The session begins with a starter activity where children are challenged to draw shapes with specific angle requirements and discuss the accuracy of their shapes with a partner, reinforcing their understanding of right, obtuse, and acute angles.
The main activities require children to measure and draw straight lines with precision in both centimetres and millimetres, emphasizing the importance of using a ruler correctly and understanding the relationship between these units of measurement. Students engage in partner work, drawing lines for each other to measure and convert, and challenge each other to draw lines of varying lengths. Additionally, they practice rounding measurements to the nearest whole centimetre, applying the mnemonic '4 or less, let it rest, 5 or more, raise the score'. The lesson concludes with reflective questions that help students consolidate their understanding of measurement and rounding. To cater to different learning levels, the lesson plan includes objectives for working towards expected standards, achieving expected standards, and reaching greater depth, with activities ranging from basic measuring and drawing to manipulating lengths by finding half, double, or triple the size of a given line.
