Time - Comparing the duration - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In an engaging mathematics session for Year 3 students during the Summer Term, the focus is on understanding time and place value. The starter activity involves a 'Fluent in Four' revision, where students brush up on their time-telling skills, with exercises such as identifying '5 past 7'. The class then moves on to a practical application of time calculation, where students are tasked with determining the duration of various TV programmes, such as 'Bargain Crawl', which runs from 12:00 to 14:00, or 'Chumps', airing from 10:20 to 11:30. This exercise not only reinforces the concept of time but also helps students practise calculating differences between start and finish times.
Place value is another key topic covered in this lesson, where students are asked to complete a place value chart that accurately represents a given number, such as 534. They must understand the value of each digit in its respective place and use arrows to indicate this. Additionally, students are encouraged to partition numbers to complete calculations, enhancing their understanding of number composition. For example, they might partition the number 24 into tens and ones before dividing it by 2. This hands-on approach to learning, which includes sharing tens and ones, helps to solidify the students' comprehension of division and place value in a visual and interactive manner.
