Time - Finding the duration - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In a Year 3 mathematics session, students are introduced to the concept of time and duration, as part of the curriculum for the Summer Term, Week 5, Day 5. The lesson begins with a "Fluent in Four" revision exercise, where students tackle questions that include calculating the difference in numbers and matching specific times to clock faces. For example, they are presented with a subtraction problem where they must find the result of 904 minus 689, which equals 215. The practical application of these skills is tested when students are asked to pair the times 16:45, quarter past 1 in the afternoon, and quarter to 5 in the afternoon with the corresponding clock faces labelled A to F.
Additionally, the lesson includes measuring tasks, where students determine the length of pencils, with one pencil measuring 11 cm and 7 mm and another measuring 7 cm. The session also incorporates real-life mathematical problems, such as dividing a quantity of items among a group. Specifically, the children are tasked with figuring out how to evenly distribute fifty-six grapes among eight children, which results in each child receiving seven grapes. These activities are designed to enhance the students' arithmetic skills and their ability to apply mathematical concepts to everyday situations.
