Time - 24-hour clock activity - Starter
Maths Resource Description
The '24-hour clock activity' is a well-structured starter task aimed at Year 3 students in their summer term. It is designed to strengthen their understanding of time by asking them to represent given times on both analogue and digital clocks. For instance, students are expected to show 8 o'clock in the morning and half-past 9 in the morning on the clocks. Additionally, the activity includes arithmetic challenges such as calculating 3 less than 3 times half of 64 and finding a number that, when multiplied by 4, equals 24. These exercises are crafted to enhance their mathematical fluency and revision skills.
The activity also incorporates practical mathematical applications, such as using sticks to form squares and working out the division of 78 by 4, which leads to understanding the concepts of grouping and remainders. This method is then applied to solve another division problem: 92 divided by 8. To integrate financial literacy, the activity includes a real-world scenario where students must calculate the total cost of two items – a train priced at £3 and 65p and a cube priced at £5 and 99p. This task not only reinforces their addition skills but also their understanding of money and decimals, culminating in a total cost calculation.
