Time - Telling the time - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In a Year 3 mathematics lesson focusing on telling the time and understanding numbers, students are presented with a variety of tasks to test their fluency and revision skills. The lesson is part of the Summer Term curriculum, specifically Week 5, Day 1. One of the activities involves reading an analogue clock and writing down the time it displays. Students are also challenged to identify a number represented visually by grouping hundreds, tens, and ones, and then to write that number both as a numeral and in word form. For example, they might see an image representing 346 and will be expected to write "346" and "three hundred and forty-six".
The lesson also includes a problem-solving element where students are tasked with finding images that represent the concept of 'half'. They are presented with a series of images labelled from A to G and must determine which of these depict halves. Additionally, the students practice their numerical operations with a fun equation that combines digits to form a number that is one less than a quarter of a thousand, enhancing their understanding of place value and addition. For instance, they might calculate that eight ones, nine tens, and three hundreds add up to 398, and then add this to 249 to find the answer. This engaging and interactive approach helps to reinforce their numerical literacy and time-telling abilities.
