Time - 24-hour clock - Presentation
Maths Resource Description
In a series of engaging activities, students are introduced to the concept of the 24-hour clock and how to convert times from the 12-hour format. The lesson begins with a discussion on the number of hours in a day and encourages students to calculate the corresponding 24-hour clock representation for given times such as 1 p.m., 4 p.m., and 7 p.m. Students are then tasked with creating a visual diary of their day, labeling events with times in both the 12-hour and 24-hour formats. This helps them to visualise their day-to-day schedules within the framework of a full day's cycle.
Further activities include matching times to clocks that display the same time, with examples like 9 o'clock in the morning, half past 3 in the afternoon, and quarter past 7 in the evening, alongside their 24-hour clock equivalents. Students are also asked to complete times in the 24-hour format, enhancing their understanding of how the hours and minutes are represented differently in this time-keeping system. Through these exercises, they learn to distinguish whether a time is before or after midday and how to accurately read and interpret the 24-hour clock, an essential skill in daily life.
