Fractions - Making the whole - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In a Year 3 mathematics lesson focusing on fractions and their application to real-world problems, students are presented with a variety of exercises to develop their understanding of making a whole. The "Fluent in Four" revision section provides a mix of calculations to challenge students' fluency in arithmetic. They are tasked with solving problems such as finding the difference between eighty tens plus three ones and a number six less than six hundreds. Additionally, they practice subtracting 397 from a given number to find the result of 336.
The lesson continues with practical applications of subtraction and fractions. Pupils are asked to calculate the time on a clock that reads '5 past 5' and to solve a problem involving Tom, who had 84 apples and gave 6 to Rosie, leading students to work out that Tom is left with 78 apples. Further exercises require students to find fractions of whole numbers, such as half of 20, a third of 21, and a quarter of 16. These activities are designed to reinforce the concept that one whole is equivalent to four quarters, with additional problems to solve that solidify this understanding. The lesson aims to encourage mental arithmetic and efficient calculation strategies among the students.
