Fractions - Equivalence one half and two quarters - Starter
Maths Resource Description
This educational resource offers a variety of activities designed for Year 3 students to enhance their understanding of fractions, particularly focusing on the equivalence between one half and two quarters. The exercises are part of the Spring Term curriculum for Week 12, Day 5, and they aim to develop fluency in mathematical concepts. One of the tasks involves a 'Fluent in Four' revision section where students tackle arithmetic problems such as finding the difference between 937 tens and the sum of 4 hundreds with 79 ones, and adding 359 to find a total of 710. This section also includes a time-telling activity where students must represent 25 minutes past 7 on a clock face.
Further engaging tasks ask the students to shade in fractions on given shapes to demonstrate their understanding of halves and quarters. A completion activity for a table is included, where students fill in missing values relating to increments of 5 and 15. This is followed by a practical application of maths where students must order items based on their weight, ranging from the lightest to the heaviest, with the weights given in grams. Additionally, the children will analyse a pictogram showing the number of different mini beasts collected by Class 2, such as beetles, ladybirds, ants, centipedes, and spiders, with each symbol representing one mini beast. They are tasked with calculating the total number of centipedes and ants collected. These activities are designed to be both educational and enjoyable, allowing students to apply mathematical concepts to real-world scenarios.
