Length and Perimeter - Measure length - Presentation
Maths Resource Description
In a series of engaging lessons on measuring length and perimeter, students are introduced to the basic concepts of length and height measurement. The lessons begin by prompting students to consider the units used for measuring different dimensions—metres (m), centimetres (cm), and millimetres (mm)—and the appropriate equipment for various measurement tasks. For instance, the equipment chosen to measure the length of a playground would differ from that used to measure a book. Students are encouraged to discuss the suitability of different units of measurement for real-life objects, such as using millimetres to measure a fingernail or metres for the height of a house.
Through a series of activities, pupils put theory into practice by measuring lines to the nearest centimetre and millimetre using rulers, and determining the most appropriate unit of measurement for everyday items. They are also challenged to reason and problem-solve, such as figuring out how to use a broken ruler effectively or why a measurement might be incorrect if the starting point on the ruler is not aligned properly. These exercises not only help students understand the practical applications of measurement but also reinforce the importance of precision and accuracy when using measuring tools. The lessons culminate with independent work where students measure lines and objects, apply their understanding of units, and reflect on their measurement choices.
