Addition and subtraction - Add three-digit and one-digit numbers crossing 10 - Starter
Maths Resource Description
This lesson plan is designed for Year 3 students during the Autumn term and focuses on adding three-digit and one-digit numbers, specifically when crossing ten. The session begins with a 'Fluent in Four' revision activity, where students are encouraged to solve calculations by counting on from the larger number. They are presented with a series of addition problems, such as finding the missing number to make 51 add up to 71, and adding single-digit numbers to two-digit numbers, like 27 + 7 and 6 + 87. These exercises are aimed at reinforcing their mental arithmetic skills and understanding of the concept of carrying over when sums exceed ten.
In addition to these calculations, the lesson includes a comparison exercise using a block diagram that displays the house points collected by different classes. Students are asked to analyze the diagram to determine which class collected the most house points and to calculate the difference in points between Class 3 and Class 1. This part of the lesson helps to develop their data interpretation and comparative analysis skills. Furthermore, the lesson plan incorporates a measurement activity where students are prompted to use terms such as 'longer than', 'shorter than', or 'the same as' to compare different lengths, such as 10 metres to 100 centimetres and 9 metres to 1 metre. This exercise enhances their understanding of length and the relationship between different units of measurement.
