Addition and subtraction - Add and subtract multiples of 100 - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In a series of engaging activities designed for Year 3 students during the Autumn Term, the focus is on mastering addition and subtraction with a particular emphasis on multiples of 100. The 'Fluent in Four - Revision' section provides a variety of exercises to reinforce mathematical fluency. Students are encouraged to solve problems such as adding two-digit numbers (34 + 48), performing addition with ones and tens (25 ones add 3 ones and 5 tens), and exploring numerical patterns by finding 100 less than 685, 10 more than 84, and 10 less than 302. These exercises not only help students practice their arithmetic but also deepen their understanding of place value and number sequences.
Further activities engage students in identifying numerical patterns, such as circling the number with a digit 5 in the tens column from a given set (563, 365, 653), and using comparison symbols to compare objects or numbers. This helps to develop their analytical skills and understanding of mathematical symbols. To add an element of spatial awareness and direction following, students are also tasked with writing descriptions to show the route taken through a sequence of instructions involving turns and forward movements. These diverse tasks are designed to make the learning process interactive and comprehensive, covering various aspects of the Year 3 mathematics curriculum.
