Mass, Capacity, Temperature - Four operations with mass - Worksheet
Maths Resource Description
In Lesson 11, students will delve into the world of mass and its measurement through engaging activities that involve the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The National Curriculum objective for this lesson is for children to choose and use appropriate standard units such as kilograms and grams to estimate and measure mass, and to compare and order mass using the symbols for greater than, less than, and equal to. They will also be using scales, thermometers, and measuring vessels to measure to the nearest appropriate unit. To facilitate learning, resources such as a teaching presentation, worksheets, and mini whiteboards will be used.
The vocabulary for the lesson includes terms like mass, weight, compare, heavier, lighter, total, difference, subtraction, bar model, base 10, and part-whole model. Students will compare the mass of different objects and solve problems using models and methods they are familiar with. For fluency and precision, they will complete sentences related to the mass of various 3D shapes and perform calculations to find the total mass or the difference in mass between objects. In the reasoning and problem-solving segment, students will tackle more complex questions that require them to apply the methods they have learned to show their understanding of mass calculations. They will be encouraged to check their answers and explain their reasoning, thereby deepening their conceptual understanding of mass and its measurement.
