Statistics - Draw pictograms 2, 5 & 10 - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In the Year 2 mathematics curriculum for the Spring Term, Week 6, Day 2, students are invited to engage with a variety of exercises to enhance their understanding of basic arithmetic and data representation. The lesson starts with a 'Fluent in Four' revision activity, where pupils are prompted to solve quick-fire mathematical problems, such as calculating the difference between two numbers and performing operations like doubling and subtracting. For example, they might be asked to subtract 58 from 76 or to double the number 45 and then subtract a given number of ones and tens.
The lesson then transitions to a practical activity where students use ten frames and counters to visually represent word problems and complete a pictogram. The pictogram uses a key where each symbol represents five votes, and students must interpret the data accordingly. Additionally, the children are presented with a real-life scenario involving 18 balloons, with 8 popping, and they must calculate the remaining number of balloons. Further exercises include working with arrays, where students determine the number of cherries in each column and the total number of cherries by adding the quantities in each column. This comprehensive approach to learning encourages students to apply mathematical concepts to everyday situations and to represent data visually, reinforcing their numeracy skills.
