Multiplication and division - Make doubles - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In a Year 2 classroom, the concept of 'doubles' is introduced as part of a lesson on multiplication and division. The lesson begins with a starter activity where children revisit what they have previously learned and clarify the meaning of 'double' as creating two equal groups of a number. The class teaching input encourages children to use arrays to identify patterns and recognise images that depict doubles. They also engage in practical activities where they physically double groups of their peers, reinforcing the concept through visual and interactive learning. The lesson aims to help children spot doubles and understand the idea of repeated addition.
During independent learning time, children are provided with a variety of resources, including differentiated sheets, Numicon, and concrete materials like cubes and squared paper, to further explore the concept of making doubles. They work in pairs or individually to become fluent in representing and recalling doubles up to 10. The plenary session involves a reflective 'Give me five' activity where students consider what they have learned, the skills they used, such as counting in twos, and what they found challenging. They also identify the resources that aided their learning and make a 'pinkie promise' to remember key aspects of the lesson. To cater to different levels of understanding, the lesson includes differentiated tasks that range from filling in number sentences to finding missing parts of a table, ensuring that all children are working towards, at, or beyond the expected level of understanding for their age.
