Addition and subtraction - Check calculation - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In Year 2, during the Autumn term's focus on Addition and Subtraction, lesson 7 introduces the concept of checking calculations using inverse operations. The lesson aims to provide children with the tools to verify their answers through a process of discussion and sharing strategies. The term 'inverse' is explained as opposite operations, and children are encouraged to use this knowledge to confirm the accuracy of their addition and subtraction calculations. Resources such as double-sided counters, stem sentences on bubbles, worksheets, and a presentation are utilised to support the learning process. The lesson begins with a starter activity where children address 'fluent in four' questions, followed by a recap of previous learning.
Through practical activities, children are invited to use number stories and double-sided counters to represent and solve addition problems and then apply the inverse operation (subtraction) to check their results. Partner work and independent tasks further reinforce the learning, with children using bar models to record their calculations and verify them using the inverse. Key questions prompt the children to consider different methods and the importance of checking their work. The lesson also addresses common misconceptions, such as counting accuracy and understanding the part-whole relationship in addition and subtraction. The plenary includes a 'Give me five' reflection exercise, encouraging children to consider what they have learned, the skills they've used, and what they found challenging. Differentiated worksheets cater to varying levels of understanding, from working towards the expected level to achieving greater depth through the creation of their own bar models and tackling more complex calculations.
