Place value - Represent numbers - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In Year 2, during the second week of Autumn Place Value, children delve into the concept of representing numbers up to 100. The lesson utilises practical resources such as bead strings and stringed tags, alongside worksheets and a presentation, to facilitate learning. Key vocabulary introduced includes 'place value', 'representation', 'tens', 'ones', and 'bead string'. The lesson starts with a recap of prior knowledge, where children observe that beads on a string are grouped in tens and can be counted in tens and ones. They practice writing the quantity of tens and ones and the total number they represent, including writing the number in words.
During the practical part of the lesson, children work individually or in pairs with a bead string, identifying patterns and practicing counting in tens and ones. They are encouraged to explore creating different numbers with their bead strings and to understand the relationship between the number and its physical representation. Activities are designed to enhance fluency in representing numbers using the grouping strategy. To deepen understanding, children are challenged to build numbers for their partners to count and to use post office tags to mark numbers on the bead strings. The lesson aims to clarify common misconceptions, such as confusion between 'teen' and 'ty' numbers and the ordinality of numbers crossing ten. The plenary involves a reflective 'Give me five' exercise where children consider what they've learned, the skills they've used, and any challenges they've faced. Differentiated activities cater to varying levels of ability, from those working towards the expected level to those reaching for greater depth in their understanding of number representation.
