Time - Before and after activity - Presentation
Maths Resource Description
The "Before and After" activity is a creative way to help students grasp the concept of time. It starts with a discussion that prompts students to share what they already know about time and to brainstorm words related to it. The vocabulary for this lesson includes everyday terms such as 'today', 'tomorrow', 'yesterday', 'morning', 'afternoon', 'evening', and 'now'. Students are encouraged to think of additional words that describe time, particularly those that are relevant to their daily routines, like 'minute', 'hour', 'day', 'week', 'month', and 'year'. This activity not only enriches their vocabulary but also deepens their understanding of temporal sequences.
Building on this foundation, the main activity challenges students to construct sentences using the newly learned time-related words. They practice using 'before' and 'after' to describe sequences of events, such as their morning routine or the changes that occur to a pizza before and after it is eaten. The lesson continues with an exercise where students rearrange pictures to tell a story, using 'before' and 'after' to describe the sequence. As an alternative, they can also use 'first', 'then', and 'now' to narrate the story, allowing them to explore different ways of expressing time in storytelling. This engaging approach not only enhances their temporal awareness but also encourages creative thinking and language skills.
