Money - Recognising notes - Presentation
Maths Resource Description
The educational presentation is designed to help students become fluent in recognising and understanding the value of different British currency notes. The lesson begins with an introduction to key vocabulary such as 'money', 'value', 'pence', 'pounds', 'notes', and 'coins'. Students are prompted to consider what they already know about these terms. Following this, the lesson moves on to focus specifically on recognising various banknotes. Students are encouraged to identify and name different notes, such as the £5, £10, £20, and £50 notes, and discuss which of these has the highest and lowest value. Through a series of activities, students learn to visually distinguish between the notes and count how many of each they can see, reinforcing their understanding of the currency system.
Further activities challenge students to think critically about the value of money in notes compared to coins. They are tasked with filling in blanks to determine how many notes of a certain denomination are equivalent to another note's value. Reasoning exercises present real-life scenarios where students must apply their knowledge to determine who has more money based on the notes they possess. For example, they explore whether having a larger number of notes necessarily means having a greater amount of money. The presentation also prompts discussion on whether money in notes is always, sometimes, or never worth more than money in coins, encouraging students to think beyond face values. Independent work tasks consolidate learning, asking students to count notes in piggy banks and compare the value of notes to coins held by fictional characters.
