Multiplication and division - Add equal groups - Planning

In the second week of the Year 1 Summer term, the mathematics focus is on 'Add Equal Groups'. This lesson aims to enhance the students' understanding of multiplication and division by teaching them how to count and add equal groups of numbers, specifically 2, 5, and 10, within the range of 50. The lesson begins with a recap of previous learning and a series of 'fluent in four' questions to consolidate their knowledge. The class teaching input starts with a practical session where children create equal groups using counters or cubes and calculate the total amount. This hands-on approach helps students to visually and tangibly understand the concept of equal groups. As they progress, they are encouraged to articulate their understanding by using a stem sentence and to practice their counting skills in multiples of 2, 5, and 10. Key questions guide the learning process, prompting students to consider the meaning of 'total', the comparison of different quantities, and the use of number lines and other representations to visualise and solve problems. The plenary includes a reflective 'Give me five' activity where students consider what they have learned and identify areas they found challenging.
